"Why Should I Become An SPE Member?" The SPE Mission statement reads, “The mission of the Society shall be to provide and promote the scientific and engineering knowledge relating to plastics…” Well, I can say that for the vast majority of people I have worked with in the plastics industry, this statement will put me to sleep; not get me to join. So the real question should be, why do you join any group or club? Most of us get stuck on the PTA or Little League Board due to our family interests and functions. We want to help make our children’s events and lives better. We join the health club because we believe we can change our habits and relive our youth. We join the bowling league or golf club so we can unwind and complain to others about our hectic lives. The main reason to join your local SPE Chapter is not to learn, although you will pick more than a few good ideas that will help your company and quite possibly your career. To find the reason, you must look inside yourself and evaluate what is important to you. The reason I joined the SPE is to become a member of our local plastics community. I want to get to know others that fight the same battles I do everyday, and hopefully learn how to survive them. I want to get to know some of the long time members, who will share stories that teach me that everything I think of as new, has really already been done before. I want to become a member of a group that can laugh at our mistakes and put a fresh light on some of my misfortunes. I could try to convince you to join your local SPE because you must support your industry. However I cannot get my dog to sit on command, so what chance do I have of accomplishing that? All I can ask, is that you look within yourself, find what is missing in your professional life, and think about how the Society of Plastics Engineers can help you make your life better. I am sure you will find the SPE membership experience to be time and energy well spent.
